Founded in 1990 by Joseph Smith, lawyers and artists, programs and services from vendors it’s designed to help artists understand and apply legal concepts to the way they do business.

Referral Panel membership is open to members of the California Bar who qualify under our Rules of Operation. Interested attorneys should request an additional packet of information. In addition to the benefits listed above, panel membership entitles attorneys to consult with more experienced attorneys on the panel without charge.
Groups:
Schools, libraries, art organizations and companies join in order to be a part of our advocacy efforts. In addition to the benefits listed above, organizational members receive two registration fee discounts for each educational program, a discount on speakers, and meeting facilitation services for a low sliding-scale fee.

Access to:
Legal Referral Services: The Lawyer Referral Service operates state wide with offices in San Francisco and Santa Monica. We refer clients to members of our attorney panel for consultation on a variety of art-related business problems. A minimal charge is assessed for a half-hour consultation. This fee may be waived depending on the client’s financial circumstances.
Arts Arbitration and Mediation Services: A.A.M.S. provides efficient, economical and confidential alternatives to litigation, including mediation, arbitration and meeting facilitation. Professionally-trained mediators, arbitrators and facilitators assist parties to a conflict in finding mutually satisfactory solutions. We also work to resolve interstate disputes through Arts Resolution Services, a national network of arts mediation programs.
Educational Programs: We offer seminars, workshops and copyright clinics for artists, attorneys and others interested in art law.
Our Speaker’s Bureau offers lecturers who speak on a variety of arts and entertainment law topics to organizations and schools.
ArtHouse: A joint program of California Lawyers for the Arts and the San Francisco Arts Commission, ArtHouse provides resources, referrals, technical assistance, and workshops related to artists live/work and studio space and cultural facilities. ArtHouse provides a 24-hour voice mail subscriber service of available studio space and other resources in the Bay Area. For more information go to www.arthouseca.org
Arts and Community Development Programs:
Articulating the role of the arts in community development, C.L.A. provides summer and after-school job training to young people interested in the arts, and access to multicultural enrichment and mentoring programs. “Spotlight on the Arts” provides arts employment for low-income youth in Oakland and San Francisco. Culture Core, our collaborative after-school program provides multicultural arts enrichment. Our Arts Industry Employment Initiative (AIEI) provides low-income adults in San Francisco with training and assistance in finding employment in the arts.
Volunteer/Internships: We operate an active, year-round internship program. Interns may receive academic credit per arrangements with their educational institutions.
Library: Our research libraries in San Francisco and Santa Monica, available at no charge for members, contains research materials, sample contracts, periodicals and books used by artists and attorneys. We have smaller libraries at our other offices; call for details.
Advocacy: We conduct legal research on artists rights, pending legislation and current issues affecting artists, including housing and taxes and participate in the work of relevant public agencies.
Job Listings World wide: Artist in Residency Programs, Percent for the Artsas well as jobs for all kinds of Artist not just muralist. You will be emailed at the start of every month, and depending on your area and our resources; weekly or daily.

Insurance: Cheaper Major Medical, Dental, Eye and Liability insurance just because you’re a artist.
